A BRIT hitchhiker who was raped at the side of a road in Portugal has been left horrified as her attacker walked free from court laughing.
Kate Juby, 23, was set to enjoy a music and culture festival near Aljezur, in April 2017, but she was attacked just under an hour after setting off.
Kate accepted a lift from mechanic Tiago Curado de Sousa, as she was previously assured that hitch-hiking was safe in the area.
But ten miles down the road, de Sousa turned onto a side road claiming he needed to pick up a scrap part.
I thought I was going to die
The Sunday Mirror reported he called for her to come out of the truck, shouting, “Come on baby!”
But he then pinned her against his truck and raped her.
Waiving her anonymity to share her story, hoping it doesn’t happen to anyone else, she told the newspaper: “I thought I was going to die.
“I kept saying ‘Please don’t kill me’.
“He kept calling me ‘Baby’ which was so disgusting, horrible. I was just screaming. When he let go I grabbed my backpack and ran.”
Desperate to find help, Kate managed to get onto the main road, and stop a German couple who were driving past.
The couple covered her in a blanket until police came.
Once at nearby Portimao Hospital, Kate was forced to endure another nightmare.
She said staff “pinned me down on a bed and took all my clothes away from me”.
After she was given antibiotics and emergency contraceptive pills, she was taken to Portiao’s Judiciary Police.
Forced to identify him, she said: “The other side of the glass, there was the man that raped me. He was smiling. It was as traumatising as being raped.
“I started crying hysterically. Six hours before, this man had raped me.”
Kate was forced to wait 18 months to have the option of taking de Sousa to court, and she was not able to meet her lawyers until two hours before proceedings last October.
He has been given a four-and-a-half suspended sentence, and has been ordered to pay damages.
